Help! My car was just stolen. What do I do next?
  • 1. Get a police report! Some people may learn their car was stolen after it has been impounded...make sure you call the police to file a report and your insurance company. You will need a paper trail for the hell you are about to deal with. We are here to help you navigate the different steps and resources.
  • . Call your insurance company and notify them of the theft and when it is found. Each company may be different but they may require an adjuster to come take photos of the car first (or may total it out altogether). And they may have specific repair shops they require you to use.
  • 3. Fill out the DMV forms for stolen vehicle AND license plates (2 forms, ask police to complete these forms)
  • 4. Take photos of everything after the police have given you a report and permission. Your car may have been used in additional crimes, and therefore may need to be held for evidence.
  • 5. Please complete this form for us to help collect information on stolen vehicles (not required, just helpful for admins).

  • 6. Please be mindful of your personal information as you try to find your car or the people involved. They have been taunting victims after stealing their cars through social media and other methods. Check cameras, security footage and be mindful.
  • 7. If you have an E-ZPass, Sunpass, TxTag, Toll Tag, I-Pass, or any other toll transponder in your vehicle, call their Customer Service line immediately to suspend that transponder. If you don't, you will be charged for all tolls where that transponder is used.
I'm concerned that my car might get stolen. What can I do?
  • Parking: While all vehicles are susceptible, we know Kias and Hyundais are stolen at a higher rate. Consider what cars you park next to when possible.
  • Use tire lock (best method so far but may be difficult for some people and in winter), hidden airtags, steering wheel/break locks (this may just delay them but they cut the wheel if need be), kill switches, gps devices, home security devices, cloud storage, check sensitivity, don't ever leave your car running, if you have a garage or driveway double park the most vulnerable car in, don't park in reverse, it makes leaving easier for them.
SCAM: My car was stolen and someone said they can track my car for a fee
  • Victims are often victimized again because they are vulnerable and desperate. Do NOT pay anyone who says they have "technology" to track vehicles and that they have also been in a similar situation. They will collect your car info, find a similar grainy photo, and request $ in exchange for a *false* location.
My car was recovered, what can I do to recover the costs?
  • You may be eligible for money as a result of the Kia / Hyundai defects. Class action lawsuit (one requires you to complete the form by July 7th 2023).

  • In addition, call the car makers directly and ask for financial assistance. This is not being publicized as much but some people are able to receive additional funds.
